The Photographic Catch-Up #2
Reunited in Trieste after Michaela’s weekend alone and my football odyssey, she was ready to move on whereas I kind of wanted to see more of Trieste. But, regardless, we were committed to a bus across the border into Slovenia, specifically to its capital Ljubljana, a capital city with only 300,000 inhabitants. And we were quickly smitten.
Ljubljana is a thoroughly quaint, beautiful city. Old ancient town, castle, river….well, cue Michaela’s photographs again…..
Somewhat unfortunately our time in the city was dominated by heavy rain incessant enough to limit our activities a little. From lovely Ljubljana we moved on, via rental car, to the magnificent surroundings of Lake Bled and the village of Bled itself. What a fantastic area it is, utterly, utterly beautiful in so many ways. Cue Michaela’s photographs yet again….
From all we have seen and experienced in our week in Slovenia (far too short a time), we have fallen absolutely in love and have vowed to return.
So that’s our two phase catch-up. We’re getting ever closer to Mostar. Next stop Sarajevo….

Father visited Slovenia year after year when it was part of Tito’s Yugoslavia….the nearest I came was Trieste to meet him one year.

You probably saw we were in Trieste just before Ljubljana and were surprised by how nice it was. I remember it as a significant border town back in the 70s/80s.

Lake Bled is stunning, I could live there. And Ljubljana is a wonderful city. I was waiting for the pink house. Question. Why the hard hat in Vintgar gorge?

I said the same, Jude…that I could happily live there. Hard hats were mandatory for the gorge section, seems a bit like H&S overkill but you have to pass beneath some rocky overhangs where rocks often fall. Slovenia is absolutely stunning. Need to see more.

When I was there in 2012 there were no hard hats. Tell me did you have the amazing bled cake?

Just the one, though I’d call it “distinctly average” rather than “amazing”. 😂. Re hard hats, when we did the Caminito del Rei two years ago, I thought it was ridiculously OTT to give us hair nets and hard hats, saying, “what are the chances, seriously”. Less than ten minutes in, a pigeon took off from the cliff above, and disturbed a small rock which bounced straight off the top of my hard hat. So what do I know about such things?!!

Does one need to plan ahead 🙂 ? When you are somewhere you feel you really would like to talk about and photograph and share . . . do it – if the time is not right, we are quietly ‘there’ for some enthusiasm to develop . . . whenever 🙂 !

Ljubljana is the rainfall capital of Europe. More of the wet stuff than any other capital city even including Cardiff. Skofja Loka was a highlight of my visit for sure.

I arrived in Bled completely unaware of what it means to Slovenians. I’m glad I went because now every Slovenian I meet, which isn’t that many, asks me if I’ve been to Bled. So yes, you have to go to Bled, and it’s beautiful.

My husband’s aunt and uncle visited Ljubljana last summer and raved about how charming it was. It seems they weren’t lying. Bummer about the heavy rain. Lake Bled looks ridiculously scenic.
