Carvoeiro: Mishaps And Mayhem By The Sea

    August 18, 2025 /

Michaela has a certain look which she occasionally flashes my way, one which says something like….”Philip, you’re not a kid any more, you really ought to know better”. We’re enjoying the fun in Carvoeiro when such is life that as the day unfolds I get that look on three separate occasions in one afternoon. First, on the boat trip, we are given the opportunity to jump from the boat for a swim in the deep blue. It’s so satisfying in the heat of the day, but, really, before jumping in I should have given some thought to how hard it would be to climb back into the boat with my…

    Sometimes It’s The Little Things…..

    November 16, 2022 /

Travel may bring once-in-a-lifetime experiences, give us memories we will treasure for ever, but if you keep a journal, or, indeed, a blog, you also build up a collection of those funny little moments….. He appears out of nowhere as we walk across the sand dunes.  “Guten tag. Wie geht es dir?”, he asks “Wir sind Englisch, nicht Deutsch”. “Oh you are from England. Where from? London, Manchester? Let me tell you one thing, this place is so much better with guide. A guide who knows.” “We don’t need a guide. Thank you. We are OK”, says Michaela. “OK. You need to know way to beach? I can show you”.…

Travel Stories: From The Boudoir To The Bosphorus

    April 29, 2021 /

“Full”, she said sternly from behind her perspex screen. It was one simple word but its implications were huge and I struggled to take it in. “Full”, she repeated, just a little more sternly than the first time. “No, no”, I pleaded, “we must get to Istanbul tonight. We have to…”.. but the stern woman was just shaking her head and looking past me. We hadn’t considered for a single moment that there wouldn’t be room on the boat – after all, how can a large passenger boat crossing the Sea Of Marmara from Bandirma to Istanbul even get close to full capacity? How can there even be such a…

    Travel Stories: The Nungwi Sunset

    April 27, 2021 /

Hindsight is a wonderful thing. Yet at the time it seemed entirely logical that if we were heading out on to the Indian Ocean to see the renowned magnificent Nungwi sunset, then it would be time for dinner by the time we came back to shore. So it made perfect sense to change out of beachwear and into something more appropriate before we made our way to the boat – got to be the correct decision, right? Wrong. “We’re here for the sunset cruise”, I called to the pre-occupied boat guys, trying to elicit some kind of response. A couple of them looked up so we gravitated towards them. “Where…
