Fethiye: Exploring History On The Turkish Riviera

    November 7, 2024 /

Balcony views like our rather wonderful one here are obtained either by choosing an upper floor in an apartment block or by staying uphill from town – ours here is the latter. Back in Padstow, the climb to our house is so steep that the Cornish locals nickname it “Cardiac Hill” – if by any chance there is an equivalent phrase in Turkish then we surely have to climb it each and every time we return to the apartment. It’s a steep one to say the least. Another benefit of being up here, as well as the amazing view, is that when we set off on our planned walk which…

La Fortuna: Lava Flows And Laughter

    January 3, 2022 /

With mountains and volcanoes meaning a lack of decent roads, transport options from Monteverde to the Arenal region are limited, with the road option being long and laborious. Most travellers therefore take the route known locally as “jeep boat jeep”, although these days due to its popularity the “jeep” bits are by minibus. A 90-minute ride along unmade roads which are really nothing more than farm tracks brings us to a muddy slope at the edge of Lake Arenal, where large white egrets hunt for fish and swallows swoop overhead. There is a regular stream of minibuses depositing travellers here, bringing enough people to fill several of the little boats,…

    Travel Stories: The Nungwi Sunset

    April 27, 2021 /

Hindsight is a wonderful thing. Yet at the time it seemed entirely logical that if we were heading out on to the Indian Ocean to see the renowned magnificent Nungwi sunset, then it would be time for dinner by the time we came back to shore. So it made perfect sense to change out of beachwear and into something more appropriate before we made our way to the boat – got to be the correct decision, right? Wrong. “We’re here for the sunset cruise”, I called to the pre-occupied boat guys, trying to elicit some kind of response. A couple of them looked up so we gravitated towards them. “Where…

    Sea Life Safari

    April 21, 2021 /

Pictures speak louder than words for today’s post, as we head out on a sea life safari taking in uninhabited Atlantic islets and spectacular sections of the craggy coastline. It’s an excellent excursion where we encounter large numbers of dolphins who follow us in a display of what our guide calls “bow riding”, as well as multiple sightings of seals, guillemots, razorbills, gannets and other seabirds. The sun shines, the Atlantic is calm and Michaela is able to capture some very decent shots…..
