Tinos Blows Us Away, So Does Meltemi
The Meltemi wind blows through the Cyclades for many months of each year – we’ve experienced it before but nothing like these last few days here on Tinos. It was windy on Sikinos a couple of years ago, but wow this has been different. For instance… When we collected our hire car, they warned us about opening the doors because they get more damage from doors blowing open on to other cars, or walls, than anything else. You don’t sleep through the night because the wind is too loud. It’s difficult to walk in a straight line. It’s difficult to hold a conversation. You can’t wear a hat. Wearing a…

GREEK ISLAND ADVENTURE
It’s time for the off again. Backpacks loaded, passports and paperwork sorted, early start tomorrow morning as we head off on our next adventure, our last paid holiday before retirement. We retire in December, then 2020 will see a year of travel as our long held dreams become reality. Tomorrow, Friday, will start in Kent and end, all things being equal, on the island of Tinos. In one sense, we aren’t backpackers: we don’t do hostels or dormitories and, at our age, we aren’t on a low budget, thankfully. In another sense, we are backpackers. The thrill and excitement of finding a place to stay; the ease with which this enables you…

Greek History
It’s almost time for our next adventure, with our next trip to Greece just a few days away as we eagerly anticipate our next trip. We leave these shores on Friday and after this disappointing English summer, the sunshine which awaits us will be very welcome. This is our last holiday before retirement: we finish work later this year, after which we are just going to travel, then we’ll travel, and after that we’ll travel some more. To look at it another way, this is the very last time we will ever be paid our salaries whilst on holiday. Ah well. We’re ready. On Friday then, we will be heading…

Next up: Greece. Hopefully.
Our third trip to Greece together is just three weeks away now, just three weeks till we hit sun, sand, retsina, fresh fish, dolmades, village wine and all the other things which Greece has to offer. So why “hopefully “? Well, because here in England industrial action is looming and airport security staff have voted to strike at regular intervals through the peak season, with our chosen airport of Gatwick due to be hit. We can’t relate to a mentality which believes that the right way to draw attention to a pay dispute is to disrupt the lives of innocent people, especially by damaging the annual holiday they have worked…
