Michaela’s Favourite Photographs: #6 On Top Of The World

    June 16, 2023 /

Wadi Musa, Jordan 2019. This is the first travel photograph of this collection which wasn’t taken by Michaela. Our host Ahmed took it as he lead us on a thrilling trek through the rocky desert location around Wadi Musa, making our way eventually to the magnificent and world renowned sight of Petra. As we sat gazing at our wonderful surroundings, Ahmed took up Michaela’s camera and captured our moment.

Michaela’s Favourite Photographs: #5 Ten Years Ago

    June 15, 2023 /

Rugby, England, 2013. OK so this one isn’t a travel photograph but it’s definitely one of our favourites, and one which touches our hearts every time we look at it. This is the only time that these two wonderful people ever met, two people who were huge influences on our respective lives and two people who will remain in our hearts for ever. My Dad meets Michaela’s Nan, Stanley meets Yvonne. We have no idea to this day what he’s just said to her to make Yvonne laugh like this. But this photograph is special: we love and miss them both. This is their one and only meeting, on our…

Michaela’s Favourite Photographs: #4 Mountain Peace

    June 14, 2023 /

Valbona, Albania, 2016. As we approached Valbona along the winding road which hugged the banks of the fast flowing river, the mountain scenery becoming more and more dramatic, we knew we were arriving somewhere special. This remote village, feeling a long way from anywhere, nestles in breathtaking beauty in the shadow of the wonderfully named Accursed Mountains. Michaela wanted to capture both the beauty and the remoteness in one shot. This is that shot.

Michaela’s Favourite Photographs: #3 Island Sunset

    June 13, 2023 /

Klong Nin, Koh Lanta, Thailand, 2020. Of all the many wonderful sunsets we’ve witnessed across the world, the island of Koh Lanta produced probably the best. Michaela has not enhanced the colour on this photo in the slightest, this is unedited – it really was this colourful. As we sat on the sands watching the sky move through its amazing palette, Michaela captured this stunning moment.

Michaela’s Favourite Photographs: #2 The Seaweed Farmer

    June 12, 2023 /

Paje, Zanzibar, 2013. Between the coast and the reef, in the gentle milky waters of the Indian Ocean, ladies farm seaweed, sitting in the water for hours on end before trudging, like this lady, back to shore with their haul. Michaela perfectly captured the loneliness of their working day with this beautiful shot.

Michaela’s Favourite Photographs: #1 The Lost Tomato

    June 10, 2023 /

Marrakech, 2015. This one was a stroke of luck, Michaela had no idea that she had caught this tomato in mid-flight until we looked at the photo much later. It was intended to be a shot of the contrasting types of transport ahead of us as we drove back to the airport – only to capture the moment when one solitary tomato made its bid for freedom.

Characters On The Buddha Train – Part 2

    June 5, 2023 /

Things are taking shape on the Buddha train. Little Miss Selfie has put herself into her self-indulgent limelight and is convinced that everyone loves her as much as she loves herself. The group as a whole is falling into two definable entities, the Punctuals and the Dawdlers, those of us who are always on time and those for whom time seems to be an abstract concept even when the entire group has a schedule to stick to.  Bob is a great guy, Ben hugely personable and exceptionally good company, whilst Patrick is emerging as someone who could teach the Buddhists a thing or two about respectful conduct. He can’t pass…

Characters On The Buddha Train – Part 1

    June 3, 2023 /

We started our recent journey around South East Asia with what was effectively a “train cruise” visiting some of the most important places in the life of Buddha. During our posts we touched on some of the characters we met on that train. Here we delve a bit deeper into those experiences in a 2-part post about life on the Buddha train…. We’d never done it before, been on an organised trip like this, so we were probably the ones sticking out like sore thumbs as we tried to gauge some sort of assessment of our fellow passengers. Who would be on a “train cruise” through India tracing the story…

Var’s New Home & Other Stories

    May 31, 2023 /

If you’re lucky enough to travel, meeting people from entirely different cultures, with entirely different lives, is one of the many privileges. It  broadens the mind, is stimulating, educational and humbling, and puts our own lives into a different perspective. Here we continue our short series of posts telling the stories of some of the people we met on our recent tour of South East Asia. Life is never quite as straightforward as it seems: there is another side to every story. Sitting outside the floating house in Prek Toal and talking with a relaxed and disarmed Var, our guide and companion, was absolutely enlightening. His story is no doubt just…
